Bug House Encounter
August 17, 2018

Friday, August 17, 1:45 – 2:30 p.m.

The fascinating lives of bugs will be unveiled in this unique experience with our expert bug keepers. They want to WOW you with an opportunity to touch some of our Bug House residents, visit the behind-the-scenes areas to learn how they care for these animals and share personal stories of what Houston Zoo is doing to save insects all over the world.

Plus, during Encounters in June, July and August explore with an expert guide the Houston Zoo’s special exhibit of giant, animatronic bugs that move, spread their wings and even spit - Big Bugs Presented by Texas Direct Auto!

Evening Chill: Family Game Night

Zoo Sprouts! Beautiful Birds – for 4-5 Years

Wednesday, August 22, 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.

Time to get out your binoculars to get a better view of these Zoo animals! We will search our bird garden and catch a glimpse of some bright and beautiful birds. Along the way, we will discover how some of the birds at the Zoo have a very important job!

Free Tuesday Afternoons provide free admission to the Houston Zoo on the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, from noon until closing. June, July, and August do not have Free Tuesday Afternoons. Please note that this offer includes zoo admission after noon only, and does not include Zoo Lights, the carousel, giraffe feeding, or other events/attractions.

You will need a free ticket to enter; you can get them at the gate or online ahead of time here, and save time at the gate.

Elephant Open House

Photo Day

Want a chance to get unique photos of our lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!)? Join us for Photo Day as we highlight a few of our exotic residents.

Photo Day allows photographers of all skill levels a chance to visit the Zoo and take great animal photos, all before the Zoo opens. Guests can enjoy the cooler morning weather and lighter crowd, plus see the animals at a time of day when they are most active. A Zookeeper will also be available to talk about our featured animals and answer any questions.

Spotlight on Species: Rhinoceros

At the rhino habitat in the African Forest

Find out all about our rhino trio: George, Indy, and Mumbles! Meet the keepers who care for these rhinos each day. Keep an eye out on the schedule for two special rhino chats, where they'll receive special enrichment items and you can watch them investigate. We'll also have a table set up with educational information, games for children and items for sale; proceeds will be donated to the Lowveld Rhino Trust in Zimbabwe.

This event is free with your paid admission and is free for Zoo members!

Scouts sleep in the air-conditioned comfort of the Education Center at the Zoo.
