National Zoo Keeper Week
July 17, 2017 - July 22, 2017

Every day this week from 12-1 p.m.

The Greater Houston Chapter of American Association of Zoo Keepers (GHCAAZK) will have a "Meet the Keeper" booth on the lawn near Meerkats where guests can find out what it's like to be a zookeeper and ask any questions. We'll also have a photo opportunity where you can pretend to be a keeper, complete with photo props!

July 16th – 22nd is National Zoo Keeper Week which was created to recognize the contributions zookeepers make to animal care and conservation. This is a special year to celebrate, as it is the 50th Anniversary of the American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) and our Greater Houston Chapter (GHCAAZK).

Many thanks to our Houston Zoo Keepers for their hard work and dedication.

On Saturday, Sunny 99.1’s Dana Tyson will be joining us from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to play in the snow and pass out special giveaways.

Plus, TXU Energy will once again host their cool scavenger hunt to each of the Zoo’s 13 indoor, air conditioned buildings from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You can pick up your scavenger hunt for one FREE sno cone, thanks to TXU Energy!

Dog Days of Summer
August 5, 2017

8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Join us for the fifth annual Dog Days of Summer spotlight on species, featuring our three African Painted Dogs, Amara, Ghost, and Akilah. These three girls joined us from a zoo in the UK just last year.

Painted dogs are also known as African wild dogs, African hunting dogs or Cape hunting dogs. They are only distantly related to our domestic dogs or wolves; in fact, they only have four toes on their forefeet, while dogs and wolves have five.

All events are at the Painted Dog Habitat, located just past lions & tigers.

Activity Table 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
8:30 a.m. – Training Talk for Houston Zoo Members - join us for Member Morning!
