Each month, a different Meet the Keeper Talk (Presented by Phillips 66) is featured at 8:30 a.m. exclusively for Zoo members. Hear from one of our Zoo’s experts and gain professional insight about the featured animals. Learn from the best in the field about what it really takes to care for the diverse animals that call the Zoo home!

This event is always FREE for Zoo Members, and there’s no need to RSVP – just show up and enjoy!

Discover how to utilize the nature outside your classroom! Whether you have a plethora of plants in your school garden or a small square of grass outside your door, we will help you find activities that can work for the nature near you. Participants will explore hands-on, cross-curricular STEAM activity stations that are geared towards getting your students outside.

Zoo Overnight: Into the Wild

Family Overnights are back with brand new adventures! Spend the night at the Zoo.

Find your inner naturalist as we search for wildlife and explore the different regions of the world they call home! Your family will be treated to fun-filled, educational activities, an up-close meet and greet with some of our ambassador animals, and a guided night hike around the Zoo.

Evening snack, a light breakfast, and next-day admission are included. Bring your own tent & sleeping bags as we will be camping out under the stars around our Reflection Pool!

Teen Adventure Program: Kayaking in Galveston Island State Park
March 24, 2018

Saturday, March 24
7:45 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Galveston Island State Park has miles of beautiful paddling trails. We will take a private kayaking tour led by State Park Rangers through the calm waters of the Gulf Coast barrier island ecosystem. We may spot some spoonbills, egrets, and herons along the way. After our kayaking tour, we’ll eat lunch in the park and explore their many trails or head down to the beach.

Please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting wet and/or dirty. Also bring a sack lunch, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, and any other necessary supplies for a day outside.

Join us for a special after-hours overnight celebrating Earth Day and learn how you can help protect the environment and save wildlife! We’ll see what the animals are up to at dusk on a guided hike around the Zoo and meet endangered animals up close.

By participating in this program, your family will explore some of the conservation efforts the Houston Zoo supports and find out how you can be a conservation hero, too!

Join the Action for Apes Challenge
April 30, 2018

Spring 2018 - Contest ends April 30, 2018

The Action for Apes challenge is an annual contest hosted by the Houston Zoo to see which school or community organization can recycle the most handheld electronics by the end of APE-ril. By recycling these used items such as cell phones with the Houston Zoo, you help protect animals like chimpanzees and gorillas that live in areas where cell phone materials are mined.

Any local school, business, organization, or scout group can participate.

Teen Adventure Program: High Island Birding
May 5, 2018

Saturday, May 5th
8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

High Island is an important stopping place for migratory birds. The Smith Oaks Sanctuary on High Island is a favored nesting spot for waterbirds. Every spring roseate spoonbills create a rookery, a large breeding colony, in the Smith Oaks Sanctuary. Birders come from all over to witness and photograph this incredible site.

Please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. Also bring a sack lunch, water bottle, sunscreen, hat, bug spray, and any other necessary supplies for a day outside.

Summer Camp Zoofari 2018 Begins
June 4, 2018

Camp Zoofari is the place for kids ages 4 through 12 to learn and have fun with an animal-centered curriculum created just for them. Every camp week will include touchable animal experiences, visits to several sections of the Zoo, giraffe feeding, and a carousel ride. Activities and games are tied to the theme for the week and will be different for each camp theme.

Summer Camp Zoofari will be held June 4 – August 17. Camps book up well in advance; register today and secure your spot!

Back for its second year running, join us for a wild night at the Zoo and get the buzz on the fascinating world of pollinators! Many animals – such as lemurs, bats, ladybugs, and bees – help plants complete their life cycle by moving pollen from one plant to another.
