The Houston Zoo offers free admission to our guests on the first Tuesday of each month, September through May, from 2 p.m. until closing.

Lone Star Access Program Admission

The Houston Zoo’s Lone Star Access Program allows free admission for individuals receiving SNAP and WIC benefits only.

What do I get?

Free general admission to the Zoo for 2 adults and 3 children in the same address household per visit. One of these adults must be the primary Lone Star benefit recipient.

Not included: tickets for Zoo Lights, the 4-D Experience, Wildlife Carousel, giraffe feeding platform, Hermann Park Train, stroller/wheelchair/scooter rental, concession purchases, education classes, education programs, gift shop purchases, or behind-the-scenes tours.

Are there any restrictions?

Tickets are issued on the day of visit only - all party members including the primary Lone Star benefit recipient must be present, and no advance tickets will be issued. Offer not valid for ticketed special events. You may only receive tickets once per day, but there is no limit to the number of times a year you can visit.

What do I need to bring with me to the Zoo?

Valid, current, original Texas Department of Health and Human Services SNAP award letter or valid, current, original award letter Texas Department of Health and Human Services WIC shopping list. No copies – only originals are accepted. Documents must show current benefit start and expiration dates that include the date of your visit to the Zoo. We cannot accept documents with start dates of upcoming months.
Valid photo ID for both adults (to verify same address household) – Texas Driver License or Texas Department of Public Safety photo ID card ONLY.
Lone Star benefit recipient of record (the person to whom the letter is addressed) must be present

What is an award letter?

The award letter is the letter Lone Star benefit recipients receive from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services that confirms their application for current benefits has been approved. Account statements printed from the Internet or renewal notices are not acceptable. It must be the original document, no photocopies or fax copies will be accepted.

The date of your visit must fall within the benefit start and end dates on your award letter. An award letter with a benefit start date before/after the date of your visit is not acceptable. If you did not save your letter or if it has been misplaced, please contact a Texas Department of Health and Human Services office near you or call 2-1-1 to request a replacement original copy.
