HOUSTON (June 15, 2026) — A young elephant at the Houston Zoo is kicking up some fun as the world’s attention turns to international soccer.

Kirby, a nearly 2-year-old Asian elephant calf, is nudging and kicking a large soccer ball across her habitat, drawing crowds of delighted guests. The playful moment arrives as soccer fans worldwide tune in — and it showcases an important part of daily animal care.

The ball is part of a carefully designed enrichment program that supports elephant well-being. Novel items like oversized balls encourage natural behaviors like coordination and problem-solving. This one just happens to look like a massive football.

Fans in Houston for the tournament can catch Kirby and the rest of the herd at the Houston Zoo.
