World Migratory Bird Day at the Zoo

Join Zoo Crew teens at the Zoo for World Migratory Bird Day at the Kathrine G. McGovern Texas Wetlands!

Saturday, May 10, 10:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Event Highlights

Join the Zoo Crew Bird-Saving Campaign for World Migratory Bird Day as we highlight different ways you can help migratory birds in the wild.

Activities will include:

  • Intro to Birding Activity: Zoo Crew will lead guests on an avian adventure where they will be looking for birds. Fake birds will be posted around a certain area and guests will be given binoculars to look for these birds and mark them down on their checklist.
  • Bird Migration Game: A game where guests pretend to be migratory birds. Zoo Crew will give them a path and they have to “migrate” that path. They will then encounter obstacles (cities) that will block their path. Zoo Crew will then give them solutions (Lights Out Texas, bird friendly gardens) to help them continue on their path.
  • Bird Conservation Information Table: The Conservation Table will have info about bird safe windows and how they help birds. The table will also include the importance of birds and other conservation actions guests can take to protect them.

This event is included with general admission and is free for members.

Lights Out, Texas

Birds from all over the world travel through Houston during their migration. Houston is on an international route for migrating birds. A billion birds fly through our night skies each migration season. Bright lights can cause confusion and collision with windows.

One small way to help keep migrating birds safe is to turn out lights from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. during bird migration season.

Spring Migration Dates

  • Full Spring Migration Period: March 1 – June 15
