New @ The Zoo
Meet The Animals
TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights is now closed for the season. Our last evening was Saturday, January 4.
Zoo Lights Hours: 6 p.m. – 10 p.m. (last entry at 9 p.m.) Zoo Lights is a separate event from general Zoo admission. The Zoo closes for the day at 5 p.m. and opens up for Zoo Lights at 6 p.m.
The Zoo is a wonderful setting for special events, especially during Zoo Lights. If your company, church, scout troop or other social organization would like to host a special holiday celebration, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The Zoo’s FREE Android and iPhone App will feature a guided tour of Zoo Lights. Download it today and you’ll also have an extensive animal guide handy for daytime Zoo visits, today’s schedule of talks and feedings, and a GPS-enabled map that tells you where you are at the Zoo.
Be a holiday hero at this year’s Zoo Lights by recycling your old cell phone with us at the main entrance of the Zoo. Simply gather any old phones, bring them with you when you attend Zoo Lights, and drop them in our recycling bin at the front entrance. By recycling your old phone, you save chimpanzees in the wild by allowing us to reuse the minerals found in your phone, which come from chimpanzee habitats in Africa. The cell phone recycling bin is located outside the entrance next to the door to Guest Relations.
TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights is back and more spectacular than ever this year – we’ve added more than 1 million lights! Grab a cup of hot chocolate and stroll through majestic oak trees sparkling with thousands of colorful LED lights. Get in the spirit of the season with festive holiday music.
Explore the enchanted forest, where you can see life-sized lighted animal sculptures, check out the all-new dollhouse village, and see holiday trains chugging through the landscape! Stare in amazement at “Holly Berry,” the 1957 Cadillac, that features thousands of vibrant lights dancing in time to joyful music.
Bring your camera to capture all the special moments, and seize the opportunity to get this year’s family holiday photo, too!
During the evening, many of our animals settle down for their long winter’s naps. The star attraction at TXU Energy Presents Zoo Lights is well…the lights!
Warm up by ducking into the Reptile & Amphibian House, Kipp Aquarium and Natural Encounters and see the animals who live there.
Enjoy traditional treats of the season, like hot chocolate, funnel cakes, sticky buns, turkey legs, and s’mores as you stroll through lighted pathways. Wine and beer will also be available. Look for the candy cane striped columns near the center of the Zoo to find Cypress Circle, the place to go for holiday snacks.
You can also sit down for a meal of more traditional Zoo fare like hot dogs, chicken strips, hamburgers, salads, and more at Macaw Café near the Zoo’s front entrance.
Spread some holiday cheer to the animals at the Houston Zoo – give them the Gift of Grub!
Lots near the Zoo’s main entry will fill quickly, so get there early to find a good spot. Even better – take METROrail to the Memorial Hermann Hospital/Houston Zoo station and enjoy a walk across the Hermann Park!
On very busy nights, alternative parking is available at Memorial Hermann Medical Plaza garage at 6400 Fannin for a fee of $7/vehicle, which includes free round trip trolley service to the Zoo’s main entrance. On nights when it’s open, we will post a sign at the intersection of Hermann Park Dr. and Cambridge St.
The Zoo’s Medical Center entrance will not be open during Zoo Lights, so be sure to go to the main entrance.
