Binturong Spotlight on Species (SOS)
May 9, 2015
10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
The binturong is also known as a bearcat, which you might know as a popular university mascot. But this long-haired mammal is neither a bear nor a cat; it’s a member of the civet family originating in Southeast Asia. There they are under threat in the wild from deforestation and palm oil plantations.
Our binturong Hannah is zoo-born and raised, and will be coming out for this special event to do some training exercises with her keepers. Come find out all about them and see Hannah the binturong! We’ll have some binturong-themed activities for you to join in!
Look for the event on the lawn opposite the meerkat habitat. This event is free for zoo members and included with your paid zoo admission.
MOM’s Day: Missing Orangutan Mothers
May 10, 2015
Orangutan mothers and their babies have an incredibly close relationship. Baby orangutans have only their mother for a support network to give them the many lessons of finding food, building nests and other survival skills. In the wild, more and more orangutans are "missing" as their habitat is disappearing; their forests are being cut down for palm oil plantations.
Find out more about this incredible animal and how it lives in the wild and here at the zoo at this special event. Visit the table in front of the orangutan exhibit and learn about palm oil and the affects it has on orangutans and our environment.
We will also be hosting two special Meet the Keeper Talks at the orangutan habitat as part of this event, at noon and 3:30 p.m.
This free event is included in your paid zoo admission, and is free for zoo members.

Endangered Species Day
May 15, 2015
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Endangered species are at risk of extinction - there are so few of them left that they may be gone from the wild forever in the near future. Gorillas, elephants, orangutans, and cheetahs are a few of the many thousands of endangered species around the globe.
On the 10th anniversary of Endangered Species Day, the Houston Zoo, along with zoos and aquariums around the United States, is bringing awareness to the global conservation effort to save endangered species and their habitats in the wild.
Join us at our cheetah habitat to learn more and make a pledge to help save endangered species like cheetahs. Then enjoy incredible animal experiences with our cheetahs and their habitat neighbor Taji the Anatolian Shepherd.
