Family Nature Experiences

Have you ever wanted to experience nature with your family but weren’t quite sure where to start? Begin your nature journey this Spring with the Zoo!

Our offsite Family Nature Adventures are designed for families and kids, typically ranging from ages 4-10 years old, to explore nature up-close through discovery and play with unique learning experiences such as fishing, bird-banding and creating nature-inspired art.

Program price: $10 per family
Program size: A maximum of 10 families
Program offerings: 8 different nature adventures to choose from, each with an interactive activity or craft

Offsite Program Opportunities

Start off your 2022 with a trip to Spring Creek Nature Center! This lovely green space just north of Houston is home to multiple native habitats like Pineywoods, Gulf Coast Prairies, and Marshes. Join us to explore the trails and create nature art for each family to take home!

Do you have a reptile enthusiast at home? Then this is the nature hike for you. Hit the trail with Zoo staff and traverse this scenic loop. See how many different animal species, including turtles, lizards and snakes, you can spot while hiking this wetland trail.

Enjoy a morning outdoors at Jesse H. Jones Park and Nature Center! We will trek their more popular trails and discover wildlife that calls this park their home. We will also use nature as inspiration and create a nature art take home for each family.

Families are invited to start with a short hike around Buffalo Bayou Park, getting more familiar with this hidden nature gem. Then, as dusk settles in, view the Waugh Drive bat colony emergence and learn more about the important role these animals play in our Texas ecosystem.

Come celebrate the day with an afternoon in nature at the Houston Arboretum! With an array of different trails to choose from, we will spend time looking for wild animals, both up in the trees, down in the ground, and even in the dirt! We will also use nature as play inspiration and see how many colors you can match in this green space.

Are your kids fascinated with birds in the backyard? Do they want to know more about them? Spend the morning with us visiting the Gulf Coast Bird Observatory and participate with staff and volunteers in the process of bird banding. Families will be able to take part in research techniques and discover why it’s important to study the migratory habits of birds that share our Texas Gulf Coast

This program occurs away from Zoo grounds and is a single charge for your entire family. Limited Availability!

Cullinan Park in Sugar Land boasts 750 acres of prairie, woodland, and wetland habitats. Though we won’t have nearly enough time to explore all of it, we will venture along some of their more popular trails and maybe even spy an alligator or two along the way! Spring into nature with us and create an art take-home for each child.

Twilight Safari: Early Explorers

While the sun might have set, our adventures have just begun. Gather your family and head to the Zoo after hours for this unique experience. Join our Education staff on a night tour of our Zoo and see what our animals are up to when the lights go out. This two-hour, onsite program is designed for families with younger children.

Program price: $30 per person
Program size: A maximum of 20 people



Onsite Program Opportunities

Get the latest scoop on what happens after dark at the Zoo! From tigers and lions bellowing to frogs and bugs buzzing, see and HEAR the Zoo come alive after hours. During this nighttime event, on Zoo grounds, you will have a chance to see our nocturnal animals in action, meet a nocturnal animal up close and participate in a few evening animal activities.

When it comes to survival, animals have unique, surprising, and sometimes even bizarre ways of adapting and thriving in the wild. Peek into our animal’s world and investigate these behaviors and how they can be beneficial. During this nighttime event, on Zoo grounds, you will have a chance to view our animals and their different behaviors, meet an animal up close and participate in a few evening animal challenges.

Mask Policy

Adult and child participants are not required to wear a mask outside but we strongly encourage wearing one when you cannot maintain social distance from others outside of your family. All Houston Zoo Staff interacting with this program will have on a face covering.

  • Water for each person
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Appropriate clothing & shoes for the weather


Some nature exploration items will be provided by the Houston Zoo for each program depending on location and activities involved. Families are welcome to bring their own nature investigation gear, including:

  • Nature Journal & Pens
  • Binoculars
  • Field Identification Guides
  • Exploration Items (i.e. magnifying glass, insect net, nature journal, bug box)


We understand that sometimes unexpected things occur. Guests who provide a written notice of cancellation to on or before one week (7 days) prior to the program date will receive a full refund. No refunds will be issued after this date.
