Join the team of over 450 adult volunteers who contribute their time and talents to help save animals in the wild as well as make the Zoo an amazing place to visit. Community Volunteer Opportunities

Houston Zoo’s Neighbors for Nature program offers community volunteer opportunities across Houston, TX with no long-term commitment or application required. Held on the last Saturday of each month, these hands-on conservation events bring Houston residents together to restore natural spaces, remove litter from local bayous and waterways, and plant native species that support birds, pollinators, and local wildlife.

How do I volunteer at Houston Zoo as an adult? 

Adults 18 and older can apply to Houston Zoo’s adult volunteer program, which includes opportunities in guest engagement, horticulture, animal habitat improvement, animal care, and administration. A 60-hour annual commitment is required.

How much does it cost to volunteer at Houston Zoo?

Here is a summary of the fees you can expect:

  • Background Checks start at $37. If you have lived internationally or in specific states/counties, your fees might be higher. For an estimate of additional background check fees, click here.
  • TB tests are optional and done at your own cost and can vary depending on where you get them done. The average cost is $20-$30. TB tests can be obtained from your primary care physician or from most walk-in clinics.
    • TB tests are a requirement for volunteers who wish to assist as Farm Interpreters, Petting Zoo, or in certain Keeper Aide roles
  • There is a $30 fee for all new volunteers. This includes a uniform T-shirt, nametag, access badge, and parking pass.
    • We are a Zoo for All. If onboarding fees are a barrier to you volunteering your time with us, please contact volunteer@houstonzoo.org

Yes. Houston Zoo’s Community Volunteer Opportunity, Neighbors for Nature Houston, takes place on the last Saturday of each month, making it a good option for people looking for weekend volunteer opportunities, Saturday service hours, or community service work in the Houston area. 

Volunteer activities vary by event, but may include planting native plants, removing litter from beaches, bays, and bayous, restoring wildlife-friendly spaces, or supporting other hands-on conservation projects in the Houston area.

At this time, internships at Houston Zoo are cancelled until further notice.

What other Adult programs do you offer at Houston Zoo?

In addition to our volunteer programs, we offer 21+ events and experiences throughout the year. These include after-hours gatherings, seasonal celebrations, and special themed evenings where adults can enjoy the Zoo in a unique setting with food, drinks, entertainment, and wildlife encounters.
