Saving Endangered Species in Texas
Just by visiting Houston Zoo, you are helping save animals in the wild, like the Attwater’s prairie chicken (APC) and Houston toad. There are 16,000 species classified as endangered, including these two that call Texas home. You can see ambassador Houston toads, like Trey, in the Reptile & Amphibian House during your next Zoo visit. Both recovery programs happen behind the scenes.
This week, Zoo staff stopped by to see our friends on CW39’s H-town Live and brought a few guests along. Learn more about the incredible work our Zoo is doing to help increase population numbers for Attwater’s prairie chickens and Houston toads from Bird Curator Ric and Houston toad recovery program keeper Brittanie in the video below.
Since 1994, the Zoo has worked tirelessly to save APCs from extinction. In 2024, we released 58 Attwater’s prairie chickens back into the wild.
You are supporting the Zoo’s work to breed Houston toads at the Zoo and reintroduce them into the Texas wild. In 2024, we released 1,865,700 eggs, 4,300 tadpoles, and 430 toadlets into the wild.
