Remembering Zamir the Zebu
Born at the Houston Zoo, Zamir the zebu spent all 21 years of his life here, cared for by our dedicated animal care and veterinary teams. As he aged, Zamir experienced a gradual decline in health and mobility. After closely monitoring his condition and focusing on his comfort and quality of life, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him.

Zamir was known for his calm presence and his love of scratches, brushes, grain, and treats. He had a gentle way of connecting with people and was a steady presence to those who worked with him throughout his life in the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo.
While decisions like this are never easy, Zamir’s comfort and welfare were always our highest priority. We are grateful for the many years we shared with him and for the exceptional care he received. Thank you for keeping Zamir and his care team in your thoughts as we remember a special animal who will always be part of the Houston Zoo family.
