Houston Zoo Prepares for Winter Storm Fern

Due to forecasted freezing temperatures and icy conditions, the Houston Zoo will be closed Saturday, January 24 through Monday, January 26. Guests who have purchased tickets can reschedule for another day by emailing group.reservations@houstonzoo.org. The Zoo continues to prepare all animal areas and Zoo grounds for extreme weather conditions and a team of dedicated staff will remain on-site throughout the weekend. The well-being of animals, staff, and guests remains the Zoo’s highest priority.

Each animal at the Houston Zoo is supported by a dedicated care team that tailors cold-weather preparations to the specific needs of every species. Animal buildings, barns, and night houses are equipped with heaters and designed to withstand extreme conditions. Animals are also given choices to stay comfortable, including access to indoor spaces, additional bedding, and extra hay. Across the Zoo, sensitive plants are being protected with coverings, and generators are positioned to provide backup power if needed.

Extra bedding keeps our animals, like meerkats, warm. They also have access to their indoor bedrooms.

Steps have been taken to ensure food supplies remain uninterrupted. Shelf-stable foods are stocked weeks to months in advance, allowing flexibility during severe weather. Deliveries scheduled around winter conditions are carefully monitored and rerouted when necessary to avoid delays, whether weather impacts occur locally or along delivery routes across the country. For fresh produce, the Zoo increases inventory by approximately 30–40 percent above normal levels and plans to maintain up to a week’s supply on hand.
