From Head to Tail: A Vet Exam with our Komodo Dragon

Even the largest lizard in the world requires special veterinary care! Recently, our 17-year-old Komodo dragon, Boga, received a routine wellness exam with our animal health team.

As part of his exam, Boga was anesthetized for x-rays that showed chronic age-related changes to the vertebrae in his neck. Although Boga doesn’t show any signs of slowing down right now, Dr. Melissa Hanson shared “the team will be working on a multi-modal therapeutic plan for him including physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and consultation with the vet team’s integrative medicine specialist, Dr. Jessica Marziani, for acupuncture and chiropractic visits. This approach will help us keep Boga moving well as he continues to age gracefully.”

Along with the x-rays, Boga also had his bloodwork checked, an ophthalmic exam, a dental exam with cleaning, an ultrasound performed, and a nail trim.

During your next Zoo visit, you can spot Boga in the habitat next to our black bears. Every time you visit the Zoo, you’re helping us save animals here and in the wild.
