A New Chapter for the Houston Zoo: Joining Our Vibrant City
Dear Houston,
I’m thrilled to introduce myself as the new President and CEO of the Houston Zoo, stepping into an exciting chapter for our beloved institution. I feel deeply honored to lead an organization that’s woven into the fabric of this remarkable city. Houston’s vibrant, can-do spirit captivates me, and I’m eager to contribute to its legacy.
Reading Prophetic City by Stephen L. Klineberg opened my eyes to Houston’s bold ambition and unstoppable drive. I see that spirit reflected in the Houston Zoo. Our Zoo isn’t only a place to visit; it’s a cornerstone of culture, community, and conservation. This unique blend makes us a global leader in the zoo world, and I feel privileged to join you in this mission.
I’m inspired by the legacy of my predecessor, Lee Ehmke. His bold stewardship over the past decade transformed the Houston Zoo. From the Galápagos Islands to the Fondren Foundation Birds of the World, Lee’s vision brought nearly $200 million in upgrades, enhancing animal care and visitor experiences. Most importantly, he shaped a Zoo dedicated to saving wildlife, with global partnerships that make Houston proud. Together, we’ll build on this foundation.
One moment from my early visits stands out. At our Asian elephant habitat, I noticed a sign celebrating our conservation partner, Dr. Nurzhafarina “Farina” Othman. It struck me as a powerful example of how the Houston Zoo supports wildlife worldwide. Your Zoo’s work sustains our animals here and protects species and ecosystems far beyond our gates. I feel this global impact is something every Houstonian can take pride in.
Our mission—rooted in culture, community, and conservation—is the heart of what we do. I believe in working alongside our team and our city to strengthen Houston’s connection to animals and advance conservation goals. Whether it’s through innovative habitats or partnerships like Dr. Farina’s, the Houston Zoo is a beacon of what’s possible when a community comes together. Our best days lie ahead, fueled by Houston’s unstoppable spirit.
As I begin this journey, I’m committed to making the Houston Zoo a place where every visit inspires awe and action. I invite you to join us. Rediscover your Zoo with your family, become a member, or support our conservation efforts. Together, we can drive meaningful impact, ensuring the Houston Zoo remains a treasure for our city and a force for wildlife worldwide.
Thank you for welcoming me to Houston. I believe our shared passion will shape a brighter future for our Zoo and our planet.
With enthusiasm,
Lisa Peterson
