World Elephant Day at the Zoo

Head to Houston Zoo on August 12 to celebrate World Elephant Day and learn more about our Asian elephant herd.

Saturday, August 12, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

About World Elephant Day

Join us at Houston Zoo on August 12 as we celebrate World Elephant Day during Asian Elephant Awareness Month with our Elephant team! For the past three years, August has been dedicated to raising awareness about the threats facing Asian elephants in the wild. We also celebrate this endangered species as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) SAFE program. Although both species of elephants are endangered, wild Asian elephant populations are about 10 times lower than their African counterparts with an estimated 40,000-50,000 Asian elephants remaining worldwide.

Event Highlights

Join Zoo volunteers and our Elephant team at the Asian elephants exhibit for Meet the Keeper Talks presented by Phillips 66, activities, and more. Just by visiting the Zoo, you’re helping save elephants in the wild.

Keeper Talk Schedule:

  • 9:30 a.m. – Bull yard pool
  • 11:30 a.m. – Cow yard pool
  • 1:30 p.m. – Cow yard pool
