Animal Encounters are experiences you can schedule to add an extra-special memory to your Zoo visit. This exclusive encounter is limited to just twelve people per encounter. (If you have fewer than twelve in your party, you may be joined by other registrants, not to exceed twelve persons total.)

Visit the Houston Zoo during Lion Fun Days and learn how to be a part in saving lions in the wild!
8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Ongoing activities, including face painting, mask making, bracelet beading and banners for the lions.

11:00 a.m. Lion Keeper Talk – hear from the keepers who care for our lions
11:15 a.m. Parade and Games! March from Lions to the Karamu lawn for games, the same games played by children in Mozambique during their own Lion Fun Day.

Lion Fun Days originated in the Niassa Reserve Mozambique as a part of the educational outreach program of the Niassa Lion Project. Around this time of year, 300+ children and their families in Mbamba village in northern Mozambique participate in Lion Fun Days as well! Mozambican children will play the same games and hear the same information as the children at the Houston Zoo. The partnership between the Houston Zoo and the Niassa Lion Project gets children inspired to participate in conservation.
This free event is included with your paid Zoo admission and is free for Zoo members.
December 3: High Ropes Challenge Course at Camp Allen

Want to experience what it feels like to be a bird and walk among the tree tops? Join us for an exciting yet challenging adventure on the Camp Allen High Ropes Challenge Course. The challenge course at Camp Allen is a set of physical elements that provide a problem solving challenge to a group of individuals. Each program consists of activities that promote and enhance positive interaction between the members of the group. Facilitators who have been specifically trained for these activities run all of the courses.
We will meet at the Houston Zoo in front of Gate 8, which is about 200 yards to the left of the main entrance, at 7:30am and drive the Zoo van to Camp Allen located in Navasota. We will return to the Houston Zoo by 3:00pm
Please wear closed-toe shoes, and clothing that you can be active in. Be sure to bring a water bottle, lunch and anything else you may need for a day outdoors.

You are already the center of your child’s world, now take them on new adventures and learn how to experience the world of nature play together! Learn about the benefits of letting your child be the play leader, and discover ways to include nature play in your daily routine.
During this two-hour session, you will also get tips and tricks on how to give the play power back to your children, and learn that it’s okay to get a little messy!
The Zoo will be closed on Christmas Day. There is no Zoo Lights on Christmas Day.
