Great Indian Hornbill

You can’t miss the Great Indian Hornbills – they are a large bird with a bright yellow beak and black and white feathers. The females are larger than the males. Their call is quite loud and impressive as well!

  • Scientific Name: Buceros bicornis
  • Range: Tropical Rainforest in India and Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Myanmar and Sumatra.
  • Status in the Wild: Declining
  • Location in the Zoo: Fischer Bird Gardens
  • Cool Animal Fact: The enormous protrusion on top of their bill is called a “casque.” It might amplify the birds’ calls, or just serve to impress others with it’s size; scientists are not yet sure on that point!
