Around the world turtles are in trouble. The number of species added to the world’s critically endangered freshwater turtle list has more than doubled in the last five years. In Asia, turtles are being harvested at an unsustainable rate for food, traditional medicine and for the pet trade.
Along the Texas Gulf Coast, nesting grounds for sea turtles are still recovering from Hurricane Ike’s storm surge and Diamondback terrapins are drowning in abandoned crab traps.
Turtles saw the great dinosaurs come and go. But from Madagascar to Asia and North America, turtles are facing their own extinction crisis.
You can do your part to save the world’s endangered turtles when you visit the Help A Turtle Out (HATO) Photography Market at the Houston Zoo.
Over two weekends, December 12, 13, 19 and 20, reptile keepers at the Houston Zoo will show and sell professional quality photographs of residents of the Houston Zoo’s Reptile House. Pick up a unique Christmas gift for the turtle fancier in your family and help the world’s turtles at the same time. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Turtle Survival Alliance.
