Spiders spotlighted at the Houston Zoo

Right now there is a group that you wouldn’t expect working hard to help you.  They are working really hard to help you with pest control.  If they are in your house, you could see 2,000 LESS insects inside your home over the course of a year.

Who are these fabulous helpers?  Spiders!  And, on May 17 from 9:30 to 3:30, the Houston Zoo is going to celebrate these amazing arachnids with a Spotlight on the Species.  The fun activities will include crafts for the kids and live animals to see, all in the front plaza of the John P. McGovern Children’s Zoo.

There are approximately 40,000 different species of spiders in the world and they are amazing creatures.  Did you know that pound for pound, spider silk is stronger than steel?  Or that spiders live on every continent except in the Arctic

and Antarctica?  Come and learn all this and more about these amazing arachnids.

The Naturally Wild Swap Shop will also be participating.  Any spider item brought in the day of the Spider Spotlight

on the Species will get double points!  That includes dead spiders, spider molts, and journals or reports on spiders.  Don’t know about the Swap Shop?  Click here to learn more.

Our pair of elderly male African painted dogs were excited to meet their new pack-mates, three female dogs that recently moved to Houston from a zoo in the UK! Check out the video and learn more about the new group here: www.houstonzoo.org/endangered-wild-dogs-form-new-pack/ ... See MoreSee Less
