Sam's Story

Sam wants to be a zookeeper when he grows up. He made up his mind about it a couple years ago at Camp Zoofari, here at the Houston Zoo. That summer at camp, he fed a giraffe, petted a porcupine, and made new friends.

Not only did he learn that he loved animals of all shapes and sizes, camp helped him realize his dream for the future.

Unfortunately, Sam almost didn't get to go to camp at all.

Although he worked hard at school and made good grades, his mom couldn't afford to send him to summer camp when he asked. When Sam's teacher found out, she recommended him for a scholarship to Camp Zoofari and a few months later he was grooming a goat at camp.

Last year we reached 271 kids just like Sam. This year, you can help us reach even more.

Give a gift and help send a kid to camp.

Each week during Camp Zoofari, the Zoo will invite underprivileged children from our waiting list who cannot afford to attend camp to fill open spaces as they become available.

Camp Zoofari is an action-packed, hands-on, week-long day camp for students ages 4-12. At Camp Zoofari, students learn about the natural world, wildlife conservation, and the animals that call the Houston Zoo home.

Because not every family can afford to send their child to Camp Zoofari, we are asking you to help provide a scholarship to help them get there.

Will you help a kid get to camp?

Teacher Recommendations

Here's what a couple teachers had to say about their students who applied for scholarships last year:

“This 7-year-old girl is one of the most energetic and upbeat students I have ever had the pleasure of working with. She loves to learn and be engaged in her school work. She is an amazing student and would really benefit from this experience because it would help to expand her interest in the sciences and show her possible jobs she could have. This would further strengthen her desire to be successful at school in order to get into a good college so that she could have a solid career. She’s already on the right path, and an experience like this would help ensure that she stays on the path to success.”

"This 11-year-old takes his academic studies very seriously, and is excelling in all subject areas. This would be a good opportunity for him since he plans to have a career in the field of animal studies. He talks about the possibility of becoming a tour guide at the zoo to help zoo guests and visitors understand the importance of caring for the animals around us and the environments that they live in. Financially, the past couple of years have been difficult for him and his family. In the summer when school is out, this opportunity would definitely get his mind off of his family's circumstances and help keep him busy, motivated, and engaged.”

With your help, local children who would not otherwise be able to participate in Camp Zoofari, can have an amazing summer experience where they will learn and grow while discovering nature.
