Our new sea lion isn't quite a year old yet and already he has quite a story. He was first noticed by marine mammal rescue personnel stranded on a beach in southern California. Over the next few months he stranded two more times, the last time in Northern California on the cost of Marin County near the Golden Gate Bridge. That's when marine mammal rescue personnel decided he needed a new home at the Houston Zoo.
Our little sea lion pup has been living at the Denton A. Cooley Animal Hospital since his arrival at the Houston Zoo. All animals joining the Houston Zoo family undergo a 30 day quarantine period before going on exhibit. The quarantine period gives our veterinarians an opportunity to observe the animals and run some diagnostic tests to make sure the new arrival doesn't have any veterinary medical condition that could be passed on to the other animals that live at the Zoo.
Our new sea lion will make the transition from the Denton A. Cooley Animal Hospital to his new home at the McGovern Mammal Marina on June 22 to meet all his new sea lion friends.
He's already endeared himself to the sea lion keepers and the Zoo veterinary staff. Everyone says he's friendly, spirited and has a super personality.
