Binturong Spotlight on Species (SOS)
May 14, 2016

10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The binturong is also known as a bearcat, which you might know as a popular university mascot. But this long-haired mammal is neither a bear nor a cat; it’s a member of the civet family originating in Southeast Asia. There they are under threat in the wild from deforestation and palm oil plantations.

Our binturong Hannah is zoo-born and raised, and will be coming out for this special event to do some training exercises with her keepers. Come find out all about them and get a chance to see Hannah the binturong and other rainforest animals! Hannah will make several appearances throughout the day, along with guest appearances from other rainforest animals. We’ll have some binturong-themed activities for you to join in as well!

Look for the event on the lawn opposite the meerkat habitat.
This event is free for Zoo members and included with your paid Zoo admission.

Spotlight on Species: Otters
July 16, 2016

Join us for a special day featuring this water-loving small mammal! Otters live nearby in Texas rivers as well as marshes around the world, from icy arctic lakes to tropical wetlands. These intelligent creatures are primitive tool users, known to crack open a tasty shellfish by balancing it on their bellies and tapping it with a rock. The sad news is, otters in many areas are in decline due to habitat loss and water pollution.

Come out and find out more cool facts about otters, and what you can do to help them in the wild. Meet otter keepers and see our resident Asian small-clawed otters and North American river otters. More details will be provided closer to this event.

This event is free with your paid Zoo admission, and is free for Zoo members.
