Conservation Summit
October 6 – 9, 2014
Proudly hosted by the Houston Zoo in Houston, Texas

Registration is CLOSED – thank you!

We are very excited to announce that the 2014 Orangutan SSP Husbandry Workshop will be held in conjunction with an Orangutan Conservation Summit at the Houston Zoo. The meeting will feature a full day husbandry workshop on Monday, October 6, 2014, covering topics pertaining to captive populations including enrichment, training, and veterinary care, through presentations, posters and panel discussions. The Conservation Summit will begin on October 7, 2014 and focus on exploring the emergent issues facing wild orangutans, palm oil and the role of sustainable use product, and conservation on a landscape scale as well as helping more zoos holding orangutans commit to participating in the vital role of saving them. Houston Zoo is lining up key personnel involved in orangutan conservation, NGO’s, corporations, growers and other experts in this field for this very special event.

A post-workshop trip to Moody Gardens in Galveston, Texas will take place on October 10, 2014. This workshop is limited to 250 attendees.

Orangutans, Palm Oil, and a Sustainable Future

The Summit for the Conservation of Borneo and Sumatra’s Orangutans will focus on the conservation and partnerships behind protecting orangutans across their range. This includes the issue of palm oil on the landscape and how we can better advocate for sustainable use product, directing our visitors in positive consumer actions. We have invited plenary speakers from both Malaysia and Indonesia who are considered experts in their fields of orangutan research and conservation as well as host panel sessions covering multiple topics which are necessary to protect this species on a landscape scale.

Our goal is to bring together field personnel, funding agencies, foundations, companies and programs messaging palm oil awareness efforts as well as invite representatives from palm oil plantations and corporations focused on RSPO products to have an open discussion on how best to move forward with one unified voice in supporting orangutan conservation measures. This will occur within the scope of the meeting that will be attended by the 55 North American zoos representing orangutan collections and selected colleagues from UK, Europe and Asia. We also expect Universities, NGOs and non-profits to attend this Summit.

A secondary goal of this program will be to message the attendees that the support of orangutan conservation programming is not simply an option but a core component of our missions to protect this species and their habitats to the best of our ability while raising the necessary issues to generate awareness for potential funding sources and better protection measures across the range.
