Giving Smaug new and unusual snacks is a great way to keep life interesting!
The carnivore zookeepers installed a zip line in the lion exhibit to provide enrichment and a hunting experience for our lions.

The Houston Zoo cheetahs enjoy stretching their legs out while running at the Sam Houston Race Park.
Our two young elephants Baylor and Tupelo now have an enormous pool to splash in with their family at the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat in the Houston Zoo. Back when they were “small” (less than 1000 pounds!) in the spring of 2011, they enjoyed playing in this large inflatable pool.
Young orangutan Aurora is now living with her adopted orang mom Cheyenne and the other orangutans at the Houston Zoo. For most of the first year of her life she was hand-raised by a round-the-clock team of zookeepers and volunteers.
Giraffe Asali was born to Tyra on March 4, 2011 at the Houston Zoo. We were able to catch every detail of the birth.
