New @ The Zoo
Meet The Animals
Smaug, the Houston Zoo’s resident and most senior Komodo dragon, enjoys an ostrich egg as Easter enrichment. Giving Smaug new and unusual snacks is a great way to keep life interesting!
The carnivore zookeepers installed a zip line in the lion exhibit to provide enrichment and a hunting experience for our lions.
See the sea lions get some green frozen pops (made with fresh fish!) for St. Patrick’s Day.
We recently welcomed Rockie, a male sea lion, to the Houston Zoo! He will join sisters Cali and Kamia in the sea lion habitat. Learn about Rockie’s trip from Sea World San Antonio to the Zoo and what it took to make this move happen!
The primates in our Natural Encounters building were very interested with our camera. Come by and see them every day!
The Houston Zoo cheetahs enjoy stretching their legs out while running at the Sam Houston Race Park.
Our two young elephants Baylor and Tupelo now have an enormous pool to splash in with their family at the McNair Asian Elephant Habitat in the Houston Zoo. Back when they were “small” (less than 1000 pounds!) in the spring of 2011, they enjoyed playing in this large inflatable pool.
Young orangutan Aurora is now living with her adopted orang mom Cheyenne and the other orangutans at the Houston Zoo. For most of the first year of her life she was hand-raised by a round-the-clock team of zookeepers and volunteers.
Giraffe Asali was born to Tyra on March 4, 2011 at the Houston Zoo. We were able to catch every detail of the birth.
