Houston Zoo's  Home School Newsletter

Check out our newsletters especially for homeschoolers.  It has animal information, program offerings, and zoo activities.

 Fall 2009 Newsletter

 
Home School Individual Classes

Students can sign up for Home School Individual Classes.  Series Classes are related, but students may take any number of classes in each series. 

All classes are from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm
. Curriculum is designed for ages 6 to 10.
 
$15 per student per class.   Registration includes participant only. Classroom space is limited and reserved for student participants first. Adults and siblings are welcome to join on-grounds activities or enjoy the Zoo on their own.  If classroom space is available, they are welcome to sit in. General Admission applies to non-participants.  

Spring 2010 Topics

Nature Detectives Series


Evidence of Invertebrates - Tuesday, February 23 and Thursday February 25
Invertebrates are the most numerous group of animals on the planet.  Come with us as we learn about the many groups and discover how to see the signs of them throughout Texas.
 
Finding Feathered Friends - Tuesday, March 2 and Thursday, March 4
Birds come in many kinds and colors!  Join us as we explore the different groups, dissect an owl pellet and learn how to search the skies for these feathered friends.

On the Mammal Trail - Tuesday, March 9 and Thursday, March 11
Join us on the trail of mammals, as we investigate characteristics and classification of this furry group.  We’ll also learn some tracking techniques to help us find mammals in our own backyard!

Animal Medicine Series 


Preventative Medicine - Tuesday, April 6 and Thursday, April 8
Have you ever wondered what it takes to keep animals like Tigers, Flamingos and Sea Lions healthy? In this series of Zoo Veterinary Medicine you’ll learn all about the daily care that goes into maintaining the health of some of the wildest animals around. From examining scat to routine checkups, training and teeth cleanings, Zoo Vets provide some of the most important routine services that keep our animals looking and feeling good. Join us at the Zoo for this exciting class and try your hand at some of these daily routines as well!

Emergency Care - Tuesday, April 13 and Thursday, April 15
Now that you have learned how we use preventative care to keep our animals healthy, what happens when there is an emergency? The Zoo has its own animal hospital where the Veterinarian team can perform surgeries, take x-rays, draw blood, or even write prescriptions for the animals. Join us as we learn about the tools, techniques, and tests that are needed in emergency animal care.


At-Home Pet Care - Tuesday, April 20 and Thursday April 22

Now that you’ve learned about how we care for animals here that zoo, you can use some of the techniques at home with your own pets!  Work on their behaviors and training so that their next visit to the vet isn’t scary, and learn how to look for signs of injury or illness.  Also learn preventative care for your cats and dogs including exercise, a balanced diet, healthy teeth, and playtime!  Then take that knowledge home and practice being a zoo vet with your own animals!

Programs at the Houston Zoo

Is your group visiting the Houston Zoo and you want to take a program?  The Houston Zoo offers programs for school-aged children Monday through Friday in the morning and early afternoon.  All programs require a minimum of 10 participants.

The Zoo to You!

The Houston Zoo ZooMobile is an outreach program that can come to you.  Each visit features animal artifacts and live Houston Zoo animals.  There are programs for all age groups and a variety of topics.  Programs are not available in a private residence, but can be held in a church, library, or community center.
