Meet The Animals

Gain insight into animal-related career fields directly from Zoo staff and learn how to get involved through volunteer and internship opportunities at the Houston Zoo. Includes brief presentations by Zoo staff members and representatives from colleges and universities with animal-related fields of study. Light refreshments will be provided.

Are you a teen that loves wildlife and wild places, and wants to help protect them for the future? Join the Houston Zoo as we do something about it! Alternative Teen Break is a week-long conservation education program for Houston area teens ages 15-18. Participants will spend their 2014 spring break conducting valuable conservation fieldwork while learning about local plants and animals.
Ten teens will be selected to participate in this program based on an application and interview process. Selected applicants must be able to attend all meetings as well as the entirety of the trip. Meeting and trip dates for the 2013-14 program are as follows:
Applications are currently closed for the 2013-2014 ATB program. Please check back later this summer for information about next year’s Alternative Teen Break.

The Summer Zoo Crew Program is open to students ages 13-17 who seek to learn more about animals and conservation while gaining valuable job skills through a volunteer experience. The Zoo Crew provides youth a sneak peek at the daily operations of the Houston Zoo while simultaneously introducing them to the many different career options available in a zoological setting.
The 2014 Summer Zoo Crew lasts ten weeks between June 2nd and August 8th, and is a major time commitment.
First Year Zoo Crew assist our Education Department in one of three areas: Camp Zoofari, Education or Theatrical Interpretation. Please read the detailed 2014 New Summer Zoo Crew Description.
Returning Zoo Crew who participated in the 2013 Summer Zoo Crew program may apply for senior positions in Theatrical, Education, and Camp Zoofari in addition to certain animal sections. Please read the detailed 2014 Returning Zoo Crew Description.

The Fall Zoo Crew Program runs from September through December and is a weekend volunteer program for students ages 13-17 focusing on conservation and education. Fall Zoo Crew spend their time educating the public on Zoo grounds about endangered species and conservation at various fall events, such as Get Out & Play Day, Enrichment Day, and Zoo Boo. They may also have the opportunity to assist with fall and winter camps.
Successful Fall Zoo Crew applicants must be available to volunteer from 8 am to 4 pm on the following Saturdays: September 6th, September 27th, and November 8th. In addition, they must also be able to volunteer from 8 am – 4 pm on one of the following Saturdays: October 11th, 18th, or 25th.
