Houston Zoo Teens

Teen Career Conference

Ages 12+
January 2014

Parents are welcome, but must purchase a ticket.

Gain insight into animal-related career fields directly from Zoo staff and learn how to get involved through volunteer and internship opportunities at the Houston Zoo. Includes brief presentations by Zoo staff members and representatives from colleges and universities with animal-related fields of study. Light refreshments will be provided.

This event happens once per year in January – stay tuned for updates!

Alternative Teen Break

Ages 15-18
October 2012 – May 2013

Are you a teen that loves wildlife and wild places, and wants to help protect them for the future? This spring break, join the Houston Zoo as we do something about it! Alternative Teen Break is a week-long conservation education program for Houston area teens ages 15-18. Participants will spend their spring break conducting valuable conservation fieldwork while learning about local plants and animals.

Ten teens will be selected to participate in this program based on an application AND interview process.  Please note the following important information and dates.

  • Online applications must be completed in full by November 16, 2012.
  • Applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified by November 20, 2012.
  • Interviews will be held the evenings of November 27 and 28, 2012.
  • Candidates selected to participate in the program were notified of their acceptance on November 29, 2012.

Selected applicants must be able to attend all meetings as well as the entirety of the trip.  Meeting and trip dates are as follows.

  • Sunday, December 2: 2-4 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 27: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (plus participation in Teen Career Conference from 1-4 p.m.)
  • Sunday, February 24: 2-4 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 14: 2-4 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 11: TBD
  • TRIP: Monday, March 11 – Friday, March 15

Teen Volunteers – Summer Zoo Crew

We are no longer accepting applications for Summer Zoo Crew. Please check back with us in the winter.

The Summer Zoo Crew Program is open to students ages 13-17 who seek to learn more about animals and conservation while gaining valuable job skills through a volunteer experience. The Zoo Crew provides youth a sneak-peak at the daily operations of the Houston Zoo while simultaneously introducing them to the many different career options available in a zoological setting.

Zoo-Crew-Biofacts

The 2013 Summer Zoo Crew lasts nine weeks between June 10th and August 16th, and is a major time commitment. Please read the detailed  Zoo Crew Description and Requirements 

First Year Zoo Crew assist our Education Department in one of three areas: Camp Zoofari, Education or Theatrical Interpretation.

Returning Zoo Crew who participated in the 2012 Summer Zoo Crew program may apply for senior positions in Theatrical, Education, and Camp Zoofari in addition to certain animal sections. Please read the detailed  Returning Zoo Crew Description and Requirements

Fall Conservation Zoo Crew Program

The Fall Conservation Zoo Crew Program, running from September through December, is a weekend volunteer program focusing on conservation.  A day can consist of anything from educating Guests on Zoo grounds about endangered species and recycling, to participating in field research at the Texas City Prairie Preserve.
