Annual Teen Career Conference

The 2016 Conference date has passed; thanks to all who attended!  Check back with us in the fall for information regarding the 2017 Teen Career Conference.

Gain insight into animal-related career fields directly from Zoo staff and learn how to get involved through volunteer and internship opportunities at the Houston Zoo. Includes brief presentations by Zoo staff members and representatives from colleges and universities with animal-related fields of study. Light refreshments will be provided.

Alternative Teen Break

Ages 13-17

Are you a teen that is passionate about wildlife and wild places, and wants to help preserve them for your future? Join the Houston Zoo as we make a difference today! Alternative Teen Break is a week-long conservation education program for Houston area teens ages 13-17. Participants will spend their 2016 spring break conducting valuable conservation fieldwork while learning about local plants and animals.

Ten teens will be selected to participate in this program based on an application and interview process. Selected applicants must be able to attend two pre-trip meetings as well as the entirety of the trip.

Meeting Dates

  • Saturday, February 13 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
  • Saturday, March 5 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
    (Required Parents/Guardians Meeting 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm)

Trip Dates

  • Tuesday, March 15, starting at 5:00 pm and ending on Saturday, March 19, at 9:00 am

Registration Information:

Registration is currently closed for the 2016 Spring trip.  Please check back during the Fall for the 2017 application.

 Teen Volunteers – Summer & Fall Zoo Crew

The Summer & Fall Zoo Crew Programs are open to students ages 13-17 who seek to learn more about animals and conservation while gaining valuable job skills through a volunteer experience. The Zoo Crew provides youth a sneak peek at the daily operations of the Houston Zoo while simultaneously introducing them to the many different career options available in a zoological setting.
