Lion Fun Days

Close

September 7, 2013

It’s hard to believe, but the King of the Jungle is in trouble. The population of African lions is falling at an alarming rate, with an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 lions left in all of Africa. Field researchers and conservationists believe the decline can be slowed and eventually reversed through community outreach and education. That’s where you come in.

On Saturday and Sunday September 7 and 8, children and families in 40 villages across northern Mozambique will hold Lion Fun Days. At the Houston Zoo, Lion Fun Days activities will be a mirror image of the community outreach and education events that the Niassa Lion Project will be doing a few weeks earlier in Mozambique.

Lion Fun Days at the Houston Zoo will include meet the Keeper Talks, crafts, and games for children of all ages. The Houston Zoo’s lion keepers and volunteers will also offer a variety of Lion Fun Days souvenirs for sale including sculpture made from wire snare traps, handmade art and items from Africa, coloring books, magnets, buttons, t-shirts and more. All proceeds from Lion Fun Days sales directly benefit the Niassa Lion Project. Meet the Keeper Talk, crafts and games are included in your Zoo admission and Zoo membership.

If you want to have a part in saving the African lion, come visit the Houston Zoo on September 7 and 8 and learn how.
