Kids of all ages will enjoy patriotic-themed activities from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m., including a red, white and blue scavenger hunt and potato sack races. Kids can also create their own American flag and march in a special Patriotic Parade led by Uncle Sam himself! In addition to these fun activities, your family can attend special Meet the Keeper Talks with the sea lions, American alligator and bald eagle.

Houston is known for its cultural diversity. Not only that, but the Houston Zoo has more than 800 species from all over the world! Participate in our kid-friendly Zoo-lympics, learn about flags and animals from around the world, and more! All activities begin at 5 p.m. Don’t forget to attend our special Meet the Keeper Talks in Birds of the World at 6:00 p.m. and our Natural Encounters building at 6:30 p.m. and see a very special drum performance. All activities are included in your Zoo admission and are FREE for Zoo Members.

Join us for a special Avenue Zoo weekend on Saturday, July 13 and Sunday, July 14. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. kids can create their very own puppet in the Children’s Zoo’s Blue Pavilion. Plus enjoy the live stage presentation on the Butterfly Stage at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and meet the cast at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Join The Houston Zoo and the Asia Society Texas Center as Dr. Raman Sukumar discusses the history of the Asian Elephant and his new book: The Story of Asia’s Elephants. The relationship between elephants and people in Asia over thousands of years is a unique one. The story of the Asian elephant begins with a brief account of the ancient origins of the creature and its possible relationship with early humans.

Join us for a boot-stompin’ good time! On this night we’ll have games and activities with a country western theme, like horseshoes and stick horse races. Plus, Zoo guests can stomp their feet to the music of country band Eleven Hundred Springs! They’ll be performing at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The games, the concert, and all Cool Nights activities are included in your Zoo Admission.
After Cool Nights, walk to Miller Outdoor Theatre and see Theatre Under The Stars’ 8:15 p.m. performance of A Chorus Line running July 16 – 21.

Get in the holiday spirit this Friday at Cool Nights as we celebrate Holidays in Zoo-ly! Join us for ornament decorating and holiday games including Pin the Nose on Rudolph and candy cane ring toss. Zoo guests can sing and dance with our DJ and enjoy a special ice sculpture carving extravaganza by Reverend Butter at 6 p.m. The animals will also enjoy cool treats to celebrate; join us for special Meet the Keeper Talks at bongos and lions. All Cool Nights activities are included in your Zoo admission!

Snow in July?? In Houston?? Only at the Houston Zoo! Temperatures may be in the 100s, but grab your mittens and come to the Zoo for Snow Day on Saturday, July 27 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and join all the chilly fun thanks to TXU Energy and Sunny 99.1. We’ll have a separate snow area for our littlest visitors to explore, along with thousands of pounds of snow for the not-so-little kids. While you’re here, pick up a TXU Energy fan at their booth in the Front Plaza and participate in their scavenger hunt to receive a FREE sno cone! All of these activities are included in your Zoo admission and are FREE for Members.

Celebrate tigers and tiger conservation! We’ll be doing special talks throughout the day at the tiger exhibit, and they will receive some special enrichment treats. The Houston Zoo is partnering with the Tiger Conservation Campaign run by the Minnesota Zoo to protect this amazing carnivore in the wild. This event is free with your zoo admission.

All divers, fishers, and ocean enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this lionfish workshop from Reef, an active organzation of divers and marine enthusiasts committed to ocean conservation. Funded by a grant through the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Keri Kenning and Lad Akins will be traveling to twenty cities throughout the South East United States to teach lionfish collecting and handling workshops. Workshop topics include background of the invasion, lionfish biology, ecological impacts, current research findings, collecting tools and techniques, market development, and ways to get involved.
Workshops are free of charge and open to the public, but registration is required.
August 2, 2013 –
Make a splash at Cool Nights this Friday as we celebrate “Wild About Water!” This week kids can go fishing, play bean bag toss and learn about the importance of marine conservation. Don’t forget your swimsuit because THIS FRIDAY ONLY the Kathrine McGovern Water Play Park will be open for extended hours, until 7:30!
Guests can also sing and dance along with Tom’s Fun Band and enjoy an exciting ice-sculpting performance by Reverend Butter. Want to learn more about the chimpanzees and a few of our aquatic animals? Join us for special Meet the Keeper Talks at the chimpanzees at 6 p.m. and the Kipp Aquarium at 6:30 p.m.
As always, all Cool Nights activities begin at 5 p.m. and are included in your Zoo admission and FREE for Zoo Members.

There will be fun activities, keeper chats, and opportunities to learn all about African painted dogs and our partnership with Painted Dog Conservation in Zimbabwe. We hope to see you there!
