New @ The Zoo
Meet The Animals
The Houston Zoo will close early on Thanksgiving Day at 3:00 p.m. Last entry at 2:00 p.m.
May 4, 2013 –
Snakes are helpful creatures in nature, feeding on nuisance mice and rats as well as insects that might otherwise bug you. Next time you find a snake in the grass, learn how to ID it and what to do at this upcoming event. We’ll have live local snakes including the dangerous ones – coral snake, copperhead, and moccasin/cottonmouth – in tanks for you to see safely. Talk with a local snake expert and get your questions answered! Head over to the Reptile & Amphibian Building for this event.
This event is included with your paid Zoo admission. This event is free for Zoo Members!
May 18, 2013 –
We are celebrating Endangered Species Day and want you to join us! Animals become endangered when their population numbers are very low and they come close to extinction. Habitat loss, climate change, and human-animal conflict are some of the reasons animals are becoming endangered. Learn about local species such as the Houston Toad and global species like the Small-Clawed River Otter as well as many other animals from around the world!
Also, bring your old cell phone to the Zoo the day of the event and receive a discount off of your Zoo admission by participating in our Cell Phone Recycling Program! Just look for the booth outside the front gates.
Schedule of Events:
Ongoing 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
9:30 Otter Enrichment – Natural Encounters
This event is FREE with your paid Zoo admission.
May 25, 2013 –
On Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 25-27, join us at the chimpanzee exhibit in the African Forest this weekend for a very special Spotlight on Species, included in your Zoo admission.
Recycle your cell phone at the Zoo during this event and receive a special chimpanzee conservation bracelet.
You can visit our chimpanzee tool gallery, color a chimp mask, pose for a picture in our chimpanzee cutout, and more! Artwork created by our chimpanzees as well as other items will be for sale to raise money for chimpanzee conservation.
We’ll have two special Meet the Keeper Talks during this event – at 12:30 the chimps will receive special food items to fish for in their termite mound. At 2:30 we’ll have a chimp painting or training demonstration!
