Planting for Pollinators!

9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Activities and games in the Children’s Zoo outside the Swap Shop

Do you like eating chocolate, fruit, and ice cream? You have pollinators to thank for these foods and more! Pollinators help plants complete their life-cycle by moving pollen from one plant to another.

Visit the Houston Zoo on Monday, January 16 to learn the importance of pollinators, and how the Zoo, and YOU, can help protect them right here in your own backyard! There will be games and activities for all guests to enjoy, plus enjoy double points at the Naturally Wild Swap Shop for pollinator reports turned in on this day.

Thanks to the support of the NFL, Verizon, the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee, and Trees for Houston, two new pollinator gardens will be planted throughout the Zoo to continue our efforts to help protect these important animals.

At 10 a.m., representatives from the Zoo, NFL, Verizon, and the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee, and Trees for Houston, along with the Houston Texans cheerleaders and team mascot TORO, will host a brief program to unveil and dedicate these gardens. Join us at the Houston Texans Enrichment Zone to start the presentation, followed by a “parade” to the new pollinator garden located near the giraffe barn.

This free event is included in your paid Houston Zoo admission and is free for Zoo Members.

Recycling Rally

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At the Zoo’s Medical Center Entrance (not our main entrance)

Join the Houston Zoo, the NFL, the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee, Verizon, and SHI for a Recycling Rally on Saturday, January 21. Bring your unwanted electronics and small appliances from home to support the Recycling Rally and help save animals in the wild!

When you recycle your unused handheld electronics, the materials in those devices can be reused, which reduces the need to get new materials from mines in Central Africa, home to animals like chimpanzees, gorillas, okapis, and mandrills.

Our Medical Center Entrance is on Cambridge Street across from Ben Taub Hospital. It provides convenient drop-off access for your recyclables (there is no parking at this gate).

Here’s a full list of items you can recycle on January 21:

Get ready for some cuteness overload! Check out our new video starring baby Antonio! This little Baird's tapir was born Saturday, Feb. 4. He'll have his colorful pattern of stripes and spots for a while until they slowly disappear as he grows older.

The Baird’s tapirs at the Houston Zoo are ambassadors for their wild counterparts in South America. The Houston Zoo supports the protection of this endangered species in Central America as well as the Lowland tapir in Brazil through a partnership with the IUCN/SSC Tapir Specialist Group to support field research in Brazil’s Pantanal region.
