    Celebrate International Orangutan Caring Week

It’s International Orangutan Caring Week! Learn about orangutans and their rainforest habitat at the Houston Zoo. International Orangutan Caring Week is observed globally from Nov. 9 to Nov. 17. The Houston Zoo’s primate staff will conduct a Meet the Keeper Talk at the Wortham World of Primates orangutan habitat daily at 3:30 p.m.

Plus, visit our booth at the orangutan exhibit on the weekend of November 9-10 and shop for painted magnets, photo note cards, orangutan painted jewelry and many other items to raise funds to protect them in the wild. We will have available the beautiful one-of-a-kind orangutan-painted Christmas ornaments, that can only be purchased once a year at this event.

This year we are debuting our own Houston Zoo’s orangutan painted sun catchers. Our orangutans have painted beveled pieces of glass and then keeper add beads to make beautiful one-of-a kind sun catchers.

The staff will have activities for children to participate in — they will be able to try on an orangutan sized sweater to see how they measure up! Kids can also color paper leaves which we will send as a thank you to companies that are committed to using orangutan-friendly (100% RSPO sustainable) palm oil by 2015.

All proceeds from Orangutan Caring Week sales will support the Kinabatangan Orangutan Conservation Project that helps orangutan and elephant conservation projects in Indonesia.

    Art of Conservation Opening Reception

The art exhibit will include wildlife art and photography from around the world including original watercolors and limited edition giclées. Featured works will chronicle photographer Paul Swen’s expeditions around the globe to some of the most remote locations in order to protect critically endangered wildlife and their environments. In addition, a selection of artworks from the annual exhibit of the prestigious international artist group, Artists for Conservation, will also be on exhibit.

All proceeds to benefit conservation efforts championed by the Houston Zoo.

The elephant is one of Africa’s most iconic species. It is in peril due to illegal poaching, habitat loss and conflict with local human communities. We need your help today to turn the tide and protect wildlife and communities in Africa.

    Vulture SOS

Celebrate nature’s cleanup crew, the vultures! Find out more about vultures at the zoo and in the wild at the Vulture Spotlight on Species (SOS) Saturday and Sunday November 23-24.

Did you know the Houston Zoo has a pair of Cinereous vultures? They have cool blue heads. We also have King vultures in our Fischer Bird Garden. The Vulture SOS will be at the Cinereous exhibit, where we’ll have games, biofacts (feathers and bones!), coloring activities and more. There will also be some cool vulture souvenirs to purchase such as magnets, keychains, bookmarks and ornaments.

While turkey and black vultures seem so abundant to us in Texas, vultures around the world range from threatened to critically endangered. That’s why the money raised at Vulture SOS will be donated to the Cambodian Vulture Conservation Project. Come out and support vultures and find out more about this cool animal!
