Dog Days of Summer

Celebrate the African painted dog during our annual Dog Days of Summer! Find out how the Zoo is protecting one of Africa’s rarest carnivores from extinction, and learn what you can do to help. Catch one of the Keeper Talks at the painted dog habitat, meet the keepers that care for these dogs each day, and find out some cool facts about their behavior. See the dogs receive a special enrichment treat and activity in their habitat! Kids can make their own “snare wire” sculptures using pipe cleaners in our craft area. We’ll also have paw print magnets and snare wire art for sale while supplies last!

This amazing carnivore species is known for its unique social organization, vocalizations and hunting structure. Poaching is one of many challenges this animal faces, and it has had a serious impact on their populations. The Houston Zoo partners with conservationists in Africa to help save painted dogs by developing special radio tracking collars that can protect dogs caught in wire traps in the wild. The Zoo also sells sculptures made with this wire once used to trap the dogs.
