Zoo Closes Early Today

Friday, June 3, the Houston Zoo will close early for a private event. Last entry is 3 p.m. and we close at 4 p.m.

World Giraffe Day

Celebrate giraffes and learn more about these long-necked giants as we enjoy the longest days of the year. We’ll have giraffe-themed activities, opportunities to meet the giraffe keepers, and the chance to purchase some exclusive animal souvenirs.

Populations of giraffes in the wild have declined 40% within the last 15 years. They have already gone extinct in 7 different African countries. We need to act now to protect their habitat and reverse that trend!

Event: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. next to the giraffe habitat
Check the schedule that day for special Giraffe Meet the Keeper Talks!

This free event is included with your paid Zoo admission and is free for zoo members.

Fourth Annual Dog Days of Summer Celebration

Join us for the Fourth Annual Dog Days of Summer Celebration! Check out our new pack, made up of our three new painted dog girls, Amara, Ghost, and Akilah, who joined us from a zoo in the UK this spring. They became a pack with our two older boys, Blaze and Mikita.

There will be free kids’ crafts, as well as keepers sharing information about the painted dog collar project saving wild dogs in Africa. Find out how you can make a difference at home as well!

Painted dogs are also known as African wild dogs, African hunting dogs or Cape hunting dogs. They are only distantly related to our domestic dogs or wolves; in fact, they only have four toes on their forefeet, while dogs and wolves have five.

All events are at the Painted Dog Habitat, located just past lions & tigers.

Activity Table 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. – Painted Dog Meet the Keeper Talk
11:30 a.m. – Watch as Painted Dogs receive special enrichment items!
2:00 p.m. – Painted Dog Meet the Keeper Talk

World Oceans Day

9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

It’s a well-known fact that the oceans make up a VERY large part of the planet we live on; oceans cover 71 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain 97 percent of the Earth’s water! Even more – we don’t know nearly as much about them as we’d like. Only about five percent of the world’s oceans have been explored – there are still so many new animals and amazing environments yet to be discovered!

Make your ocean discoveries at the Houston Zoo during World Oceans Day! We’ll have an activity table in the front plaza area. Check our Plan Your Visit schedule that day on the web, our kiosk or the Zoo App to find out when we’ll have special Ocean Meet the Keeper Talks. And don’t miss gazing at undersea life in Kipp Aquarium and in Carruth Natural Encounters.

World Oceans Day activities are free – included with your paid Zoo admission and are free to Zoo members.
