<description> According to a recent Houston Chronicle article by reporter Harvey Rice, sea turtles on the Texas coast need our help! Federal funding for beach patrols has been cut. The patrols have been crucial to restoring the population of the critically endangered Kemp&#8217;s ridley sea turtle. Answering the Call of the Wild, Houston area lawyer Joe Jamail is pledging $25,000 to sea turtle conservation if other donors will match the amount. Please help the Houston Zoo raise money to meet this goal! To donate online, please click on the Donate Now button below or send checks to the attention of: Houston Zoo Conservation Department 1513 N. MacGregor Houston, Texas 77030 For more information, please email us. <title>Conserve Wildlife</title>
<description>See how our local and worldwide conservation missions are making a difference! Our conservation mission is to make the Houston Zoo a leader in conservation as it relates to the survival of threatened wildlife, the wise use of natural resources, and the appreciation of our natural world by zoo visitors. Today, these objectives are being furthered through a comprehensive program of on-site and field initiatives based on: good science sound economics and cultural sensitivity This all helps us focus our conservation efforts where they can have the greatest impact. The Zoo&#8217;s major concern is the preservation of biological diversity&#8212; the survival of species and their natural habitats. Whether the species are rare, endangered or even common, or they reside in shrinking forests or vast untouched regions, our goal is to help sustain their populations and to preserve as much of...

			<title>ZACC Exhibitors</title>
<description> Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation Exhibitors The mission of the Zoos and Aquariums: Committing to Conservation conference is to promote the greater involvement of zoos and aquariums in support of in situ conservation efforts whether on a local, regional and/or international level. The biennial conference continues to focus on how best to provide partnership opportunities between field researchers and zoos and aquariums, provide a useful and positive networking atmosphere and instill a feeling of inspiration to the participants. We feel that the relationships developed between conservation commerce, products developed to support communities involved with surrounding research initiatives, plays an important role in the long-term success of these efforts. A number of vendors attended the 2007 event and from this, a new initiatve was formed: Vendors for Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation (VZACC). <title>Rare St. Vincent Parrot Hatched at the Houston Zoo!</title>
<description>Birth the First at the Zoo Since 1999 On April 25, 1972 the Houston Zoo made history, recording the first hatching in captivity of an endangered St. Vincent Amazon parrot. That first birth was followed by a second hatching in 1999. Today, the Houston Zoo is proud to report that history has repeated itself again and Zoo bird keepers are caring for a St. Vincent Amazon that hatched on May 28, 2008. The chick has been named Vincent after the father of the first St. Vincent born at the Houston Zoo. The chick hatched after 25 days of incubation and is being hand raised at the Zoo&#8217;s off exhibit Avian Conservation Environment (ACE) building, said Houston Zoo Bird Department supervisor Chris Holmes. For the first 28 days Vincent was hand fed every two hours from 5 in the morning until midnight. He went home with me in the evening and came to work with me every morning, said Holmes. Vincent was transported in a specially made climate controlled carrier. Found only on the Caribbean...

<title>Vietnam's Primates: Endangered Primate Rescue Center</title>
<description>The primate fauna of Vietnam, containing several endemic Endangered and Critically Endangered species, is considered one of the highest global conservation priorities by the IUCN/SSC Primate Specialist Group. Of the 25 primate species found in Vietnam, 5 are endemic (found only in Vietnam) and listed among the world&#8217;s 25 most endangered primate species. A number of worthwhile programs were launched in Vietnam in the 1990s and have continued through the early part of the new century, broadly focused on the status of remaining wild populations, increasing levels of protection in existing parks and reserves, augmenting the national protected area system, establishing captive breeding colonies of threatened species, and building local capacity for conservation. Vietnam&#8217;s Endangered Primate Rescue Center was established in 1993 adjacent to the entrance of Cuc Phuong National Park. The park itself was the first in the country&#8217;s national protected area system and was created specifically to...

			<title>Tapir Conservation</title>
<description>Influence of Large Herbivores on Neotropical Forests The Houston Zoo has partnered with the IUCN/SSC Tapir Specialist Group, in supporting field research focused on the ecology of the world&#8217;s threatened tapir species, genus Tapirus. There are four living species of tapir; three in Latin America: Bairds, Lowland, and Mountain and the Malayan Tapir of Southeast Asia. The Houston Zoo works closely with Patricia Medici, Chair of the IUCN Tapir Specialist Group in supporting a Lowland Tapir Project in Brazil&#8217;s Morro de Diabo State Park to assist researchers in determining the Influence of Large Herbivores on Neotropical Forests. By excluding such animals (e.g., tapirs, brocket deer and peccaries) from fenced forest plots, researchers at four Neotropical sites are gathering data related to the absence of these large herbivores from natural tropical forest ecosystems, attempting to document the specific environmental effects related to the ecological roles of these species. Brazilian field...
