The first Saturday of every month, Houston Zoo Members are invited to enjoy the Zoo an hour earlier and see keepers, grounds crew, and other staff preparing to open the Zoo for the day, including releasing animals from their night holds into their habitats. Members can experience the Zoo before the crowds on these select mornings and start the day off right with a trip to the Zoo.

Please note that the Wildlife Carousel, and concessions stands, and cafes will open at 9:00 a.m. the Aquarium and Natural Encounters will open at 8:00 a.m.

Just present your Membership Card at the main entrance to join in the fun.

Want a more detailed look at the Zoo? Join expert Houston Zoo animal keepers for a 1-1 ½ hour in depth look at the Zoo. We will be your personal guides as we share fascinating stories and facts about the wonderful collection of animals who call the Houston Zoo home. Each Walk on the Wild Side Tour focuses on a particular section of the zoo so you can get an intimate look at some of the Zoo’s most interesting inhabitants.

This exciting tour will feature Canines of the World. Your tour will be led by our very own Anatolian Shepherds. Join the leaders of the pack and get the inside scoop on our canines. This tour will includes stops at the swift fox, African wild dogs, and maned wolves. Wow, that's alot of canines!

The Houston Zoo reserves the right to cancel any tour. In the event that such a cancellation occurs, we will notify you by email of the cancellation and of the reschedule date.

Have you ever wondered if tigers sleep at night? What about the clouded leopard? And what is a maned wolf?

Back by popular demand, November 1, 2008, we are offering a very unique opportunity to take a night tour. Your journey will take you on a flashlight-guided tour of these amazing animals. For one and a half hours, you will be lead by our knowledgeable staff through the intriguing world of carnivores! Your adventure will begin at 6:30 pm and last until 8:00 pm. Time To Get Rolling Again For Rhinoceros Conservation!

Hello [firstname],

If you like bowling and you’ve got a soft spot in your heart for rhinos, then the Houston Zoo has a deal for you – Bowling for Rhinos!

The Houston Zoo chapter of the American Association of Zookeepers (AAZK) is sponsoring the 18th annual Bowling for Rhinos (BFR) conservation fundraiser on Friday, July 25 from 6-10 p.m. at Palace Lanes, 4191 Bellaire Blvd. The night includes unlimited bowling for four hours, a cool BFR 2008 event T-shirt, free shoe and ball rental, and fun for the whole family. Tickets are $25 per person for adults and $10 per person for children ages 5-12.

BFR supports three sanctuaries that protect rhinos and their unique ecosystems: Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Africa; the Bukit Barisa Selatan National Park in Java, Indonesia; and Ujung Kulon National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia. The rhinoceros has been on earth for over 50 million years, and it is believed that over 100 separate species existed. That number has dwindled to five: White, Black, Indian, Sumatran and Javan. The Javan rhinoceros is the most endangered with a population hovering at 47, a decline of 13 animals in just the last year.

Bowling for Rhinos is a great way to spend a hot and humid Houston summer evening in an air-conditioned environment, having a great time and making a valuable contribution to wildlife conservation.

Here's what's happening at the Zoo this month.

Getting Squirrely at the Zoo!

They’re small and quick and they are the newest addition to the Houston Zoo’s award winning Natural Encounters Building. They are Harris' antelope squirrels and they may be seen daily in the Natural Encounters Drylands Exhibit. The Houston Zoo is the only zoo in the past 8 years to have bred the species.

Born on April 23, the 5 babies spent the first several weeks of their lives in an off exhibit area of the Natural Encounters Building. About a week before the babies were born, their mom, Middlin (their father is Humphrey) started making a nest in the area using hay and feathers. She had been seen collecting feathers from the guinea fowl that live in the Drylands Exhibit. More...

Avoid Fourth of July Holiday Traffic Snarls: Expect Heavy Traffic in Hermann Park on the Fourth of July

Hermann Park and the Zoo will see an unusually large number of visitors during the Independence Day Fourth of July holiday.

If the weather is good, it is possible that the Park could see thousands of people on the Fourth. With limited parking spaces available in the Park, holiday visitors can expect heavy traffic congestion in and around the area.

Dr. Edward Louis, Conservation Geneticist September 4th, 2008

A Houston native,
Ed Louis is the conservation geneticist for Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo's Center for Conservation and Research. In an effort to develop baseline molecular, distribution and census data on lemurs and other Malagasy flora and fauna, Louis has carried out and supervised extensive fieldwork on the island since 1998. Each year the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) sponsors a fund raising bowl-a-thon called ‘Bowling For Rhinos’ (BFR).

BFR funds support Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia and Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park in Sumatra. These sanctuaries not only save rhinos but entire ecosystems!
