HOUSTON ZOO AND FIESTA MART LAUNCH DISCOUNT TICKET INITIATIVE

(HOUSTON) June 21, 2007 … The Houston Zoo and Fiesta Mart are joining forces to help families stretch their recreation dollars through the summer and beyond.  Beginning July 1, Houstonians can purchase discount Zoo tickets at any of the 33 Fiesta Mart stores across the Houston area.

“We’re very excited about our partnership with Fiesta Mart and the opportunity this partnership offers to our guests,” said Houston Zoo President and CEO Deborah Cannon.  “Fiesta Mart has a long tradition of supporting Houston nonprofit institutions and education programs and we are proud to have them join us in this initiative,” said Cannon.

Beginning July 1, visit the courtesy booth of any Fiesta Mart in the Houston area to purchase an adult Zoo admission for $8 and a child Zoo admission for $4.  Tickets will be valid for one year from the date of purchase.

“Fiesta is very excited about working with the Zoo,” said Fiesta spokesperson Keith Jacobsen.  “It is a privilege to provide a discount ticket for all Houstonians to a Houston attraction like the Zoo.  We are looking forward to the relationship,” said Jacobsen.

The Zoo has changed markedly in the past five years since its transition to management under a public/private partnership.  Since 2002 the Zoo has opened new exhibits and attractions, refurbished existing exhibits and treasured Zoo landmarks, and worked diligently to deliver an outstanding guest experience.

Each year the Zoo’s board of Directors reviews the Zoo’s admission price structure.  This year the Board unanimously approved higher admission prices.  It is the zoo’s first admission increase in two years.  Effective July 1, 2007 admission prices for tickets purchased the Zoo admission booths will be $10 for adults (age 12 to 64), $5 for children (age 2 to 12), and $5.75 for seniors (age 65+).  Children under two years of age are admitted free of charge.

The Zoo will continue to observe five free days each year (MLK Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and the Friday after Thanksgiving).  The Zoo will also continue a near 20 year tradition of free field trip admission for the students of public and private schools within the city limits of Houston.  The Zoo’s Community Access Ticket program makes tickets available year round through a partnership with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Harris County Hospital District’s Prescription for Fun program.  KTRK, ABC 13 television has generously provided public service announcements to help promote the Access program.

“In our last fiscal year, FY 2006, approximately 18 percent of the Zoo’s average 1.4 million guests, about 250,000 people enjoyed the Zoo free of charge,” said Cannon.  “Attendance figures for the fiscal year just ends June 30th are not yet available but we expect to meet that free attendance number this year,” added Cannon.
