McNair Asian Elephant Habitat

The Houston Zoo's Asian elephant herd includes six elephants:
- One adult male, Thai,
- Three females: Me-Thai, Shanti, and Tess
- Tess's calf, Tucker
- Shanti's newborn, Baylor
These highly intelligent creatures are an endangered species. Scientists estimate that there are less than 50,000 wild Asian elephants; they live in India, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. (By comparison, there are 600,000 wild African elephants.)
- Two Baby Elephants in 2010 Shanti gave birth May 4 and Tess is expected to have a baby in the fall.
- Elephant Herpes Virus Research
We have teamed up with Baylor College of Medicine to focus on research for the Elephant Herpes Virus. - Donate to the Elephant Herpes Virus Research Fund and help find a cure.
Elephant Exhibit Expansion The new elephant barn and larger outdoor areas are the first phase of a two-phase program to expand the elephant facility at the Zoo.
