New Sea Lion Makes Splashy Debut at the Houston Zoo!

Deano Personally Thanks FedEx Official for
His Delivery to New Home

Deano the California sea lion
made his official debut at the Houston Zoo today, planting a big kiss on the cheek of FedEx manager Lisa Akers thanking the carrier for the great care he received on his flight from Honolulu, Hawaii to his new Houston home.

“We at FedEx absolutely, positively care about the communities we serve and it was our pleasure to deliver Deano from Hawaii,” said FedEx manager Lisa Akers.  “Thank you for letting us be a part of this special delivery,” added Akers.

Tipping the scales at nearly 600 pounds, Deano made a transpacific flight from Hawaii to Houston on board a FedEx jet in late May, accompanied by Houston Zoo sea lion keepers and a Houston Zoo veterinarian. “FedEx personnel gave him star treatment every step of the way. He had a great flight,” said Houston Zoo curator Beth Schaefer.

Since his arrival at the Zoo’s McGovern Mammal Marina, Deano has been settling into his new home, getting to know his keepers, enjoying swimming in the pool and getting to know Cali and Kamia, the Zoo’s 4 year old female sea lions. “Deano is such a big friendly sea lion and has such a great personality. He acclimated quickly to his new home, his environment and his new friends,” said Schafer.  At the Zoo, Deano will be a training mentor and companion for Cali and Kamia.

Playful and inquisitive, California sea lions are found up and down the western coast of North America, from Mexico to the beaches of Vancouver, British Colombia.  Sea lions have called the Houston Zoo home since the 1950s. Through their infectious personalities and exciting behaviors, California sea lions provide Zoo trainers an opportunity to promote the importance of marine mammal conservation through a variety of interactions.
