Crowd Curated Exibit

Have you ever wondered what it is that a Zoo Curator does?

Most people know what a curator in a museum does. They oversee the collection, bring in new artifacts or art objects, and decide which piece goes where in an exhibit right?  Well Zoo Curators have very similar duties -just with animals.

Zoo Curators get to decide which species we should house in each exhibit, talk to other zoos to obtain the animals and help with the messaging on the signs in front of each exhibit.  It’s fun to come up with an idea of new animals we might like to share with our guests, talk to people all over the country to see if any are available, plan the exhibit and watch the fascination of our guests on opening day!

Does being a Zoo Curator sound like something you’d like to do?  Well now is your chance!  Help us with the first ever Crowd Curated Zoo Exhibit!

How It Works

We currently have an empty exhibit in the Wortham World of Primates.  Help us choose a new species to exhbit at the Houston Zoo Wortham World of Primates.

  • Follow along as we investigate which zoos are looking for homes for the chosen species of primate
  • See what it takes to prepare a Zoo exhibit for a new species!

There might be a few contests along the way to let you get hands-on with preparing an exhibit for new animals.

We hope you’ll visit the zoo to see how “your” exhibit is coming along.

Follow our Houston Zoo Blog for updates and voting and submit your suggestions in the “comments” section.  We look forward to all of our new “curators” helping with this project!
