Conservation in Africa

The Houston Zoo partners with and supports several wildlife conservation projects in Africa.

Our partners are leaders in wildlife conservation and research.  They focus on the preservation of african wildlife and their habitats by combining conservation with education and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local communities.

• Art of Conservation: Rwanda
  Working in poor rural communities surrounding Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, empowering and educating the local children about the importance of maintaining a healthy environment for people and animals.

  Dedicated veterinarians working tirelessly to ensure the health of Mountain Gorilla troops.

  Ensuring the survival of great apes through conservation and education.

  Exciting new research looking at population and distribution of chimpanzees in Senegal.

  Locally managed community-based conservation projects.

  Working to save Rhino species all over the world through conservation and research.
• Cheetah Conservation Botswana
  Focusing on research and reducing human wildlife conflict by cultivating relationships with local farmers.
• Niassa Lion Project
Securing lions in the Niassa National Reserve by reducing human-induced threats and promoting co-existence between lions and people.
