Conservation in Borneo

The Houston Zoo partners with and supports several wildlife conservation projects in Borneo.

Our partners in the field are leaders in wildlife conservation and research.  They focus on the preservation of asian wildlife and their habitats by combining conservation with education and promotion of sustainable livelihoods in local communities.

Elephant Conservation Unit   To contribute to the long-term survival of the Kinabatangan elephant population by restoring more harmonious relationships between the local communities and the elephants

Elephant Habitat Survey Satellite tracking and social behavior study of the Bornean elephant in the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary, Sabah, Malaysia

Orangutan  The Kinabtangan Orangutan Conservation Project is is run entirely by trained staff from the nearby village of Sukau and has been the source of significant data regarding the ecology and behavior of wild orangutans in secondary forest habitats.

CarnivoresThe Kinabatangan Carnivore Survey Program is a new effort intended to advance understanding, and the conservation, of the threatened carnivore species of the Lower Kinabatangan floodplain.

Banteng Survey  The Banteng (Bos javanicus), also known as Tembadau, are a endangered species of wild cattle found only in Southeast Asia. In order to conserve the Borneo subspecies and effectively manage the sustainability and genetic diversity of the remaining population it is critical an evaluation is conducted before further declines occur.
