Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and the Houston Zoo are challenging you and your family to let go of the electronics and Get Out and Play! Join us on Saturday, September 14 for Get Out and Play, Presented by Kelsey-Seybold Clinic!

This Zoo-wide event will be filled with exciting and challenging games and activities for children and adults to enjoy. All of the activities seek to inspire everyone to Get Out and Play more often and explore the world around you.

For more info on Get Out and Play, check out out special webpage here: Get Out and Play Presented by Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

If you can’t make it to the Zoo for our special Get Out and Play day, no worries. There are still a ton of activities you and your family can do right around your house to enjoy the outdoors! Stumped on ideas? We just so happen to have a couple ones for you below. Check out these games and activities designed to enjoy being outside:

The 100 Inch Hike

Supplies: A piece of string 100 inches long for each participant.
Purpose: To increase awareness of nature on a small scale.

In the 100 Inch Hike, everyone is given a piece of string 100 inches long. Each player lays out the string on the ground in the grass or other non-paved area. Get creative with how you lay the string! After the string has been laid out, players should careful examine the ground along the path of the string. Get close up! Look for things such as animal tracks, insects, distinctive plants, soil and sand textures, colors, etc. Each player can record their findings. To extend the hike, players can inspect each other’s string paths to compare findings.

Wildlife Scavenger Hunt

Supplies: A list of wildlife items that can be found around your neighborhood or local park.

Purpose: To become more familiar with local wildlife.

In the wildlife scavenger hunt, it’s time to learn a little more about your local wildlife. This works best if parents create a list and accompany the players throughout the scavenger hunt. Below is an example of some items that can be on your list:

  • Something yellow
  • Something round
  • Something hard
  • Something soft
  • 5 leaves with different shapes
  • An animal sign
  • A pattern or shape you like
  • 3 rocks with different colors

We  hope that you enjoy these suggestions. Be on the lookout for more this week!

Christin Maciel MooreIs a bigger giraffe enclosure a possibility in the future? It's just so small in comparison to some if the other amazing habitats the other animals have. Love the zoo and all y'all do to try and help.
