Shanti, our 19-year-old female Asian elephant, gave birth May 4, 2010 to a healthy baby boy named Baylor. And guess what else? 26-year-old Tess is expected to have a baby elephant in the fall!
Great things are happening at the Houston Zoo in 2010. Two new baby elephants AND the grand opening of The African Forest will be tremendous additions to the Zoo.
McNair Asian Elephant Habitat To Expand
Later this year, our Masai giraffes will move into a new exhibit and new barn when The African Forest opens to the public. When the giraffes move into their new home, we’ll begin to renovate our current Asian elephant exhibit to encompass the space where our giraffes currently live – just in time for when the new elephant babies start to grow up!
As a non-profit, we rely on the ongoing support of the Houston community to make these major upgrades possible. In everything we do, we strive to create the most natural and comfortable environment for our animals, so that Houston Zoo guests can get the most out of their visit and be inspired to protect wildlife themselves.
