Two Baby Elephants In 2010

We Have Some Big, Big News!

We've had two elephant births in five months at the Houston Zoo. Shanti, our 19 year old female Asian elephant, gave birth May 4, 2010 to a healthy baby boy named Baylor. 29 year old Tess, mom to Tucker, gave birth to a healthy 273 pound baby girl Tupelo on Sunday October 3, 2010.

Great things are happening at the Houston Zoo in 2010. Two new baby elephants AND the grand opening of The African Forest will be tremendous additions to the Zoo.

McNair Asian Elephant Habitat To Expand

Our Masai giraffes have moved into a new exhibit and new barn that's part of  The African Forest which opens to the public this December. W are now poised to begin to renovate our current Asian elephant exhibit to encompass the space where our giraffes currently live – just in time for when the new elephant babies will need the new space to play and grow!

As a non-profit, we rely on the ongoing support of the Houston community to make these major upgrades possible. In everything we do, we strive to create the most natural and comfortable environment for our animals, so that Houston Zoo guests can get the most out of their visit and be inspired to protect wildlife themselves.

You can make a difference today.
