Attwater’s Prairie Chicken Recovery Program –2011 update
A total of 37 birds raised at the Houston Zoo were released into the wild this year!
March 30, 2011 - The first of the Attwater’s Prairie chickens eggs were brought over from the NASA prairie chicken facility to be incubated here at the zoo. They were all weighed, measured and candled (an ultrasound for eggs) to ensure they were in good shape before being put into the incubators.
April 25, 2011 - First Attwater's prairie chicken chick hatched.
May 12, 2011 - First Attwater's prairie chicken chicks have been moved out of the inside brooder room and into large covered pens outside this week.
July 12, 2011- 17 chicks captive bred at the Houston Zoo were transported 1 1/2 hours west of Houston to a soft release enclosure at the Attwater's Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge.
July 26, 2011 - The soft release pen at the Attwater's Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge was opened for the first 17 juvenile Attwater's prairie chickens. They are now free on the open prairie.
Aug. 15, 2011 - 14 more Attwater's Prairie chicks were taken for a release near Goliad, Texas.
