Every single day, on average, we spend $1,930 on animal diets, $2,313 for animal veterinary care, and $12,160 for husbandry staffing and programs. Maintaining quality animal care in order to provide unique guest experiences is the number one priority, and every single gift helps make that possible.
The Annual Drive to Support the Zoo is the cornerstone of the Zoo’s budget, which underwrites the Zoo’s first-rate animal care and enrichment programs. Your Annual Drive support helps the Zoo to deliver an experience that is both unique and educational every time you visit.
One example of your Zoo at work is our elephant program. Visitors to the Zoo are delighted by our resident Asian elephant family, especially its latest addition, a healthy 384 lb. male born in October 2006. These striking animals’ presence serves as a reminder of the plight of its species and of the regional environmental issues that need addressing. Responding to this need, the Houston Zoo partners with organizations within native range to help to preserve the elephants’ natural habitat. Our Zoo’s effort is just one of many aimed at protecting our collection’s counterparts in the wild.
