Remembering Noel

Noel passed away on July 12 during labor that also resulted in the loss of her calf.  Her legacy will live on in the memories of everyone at the Houston Zoo who loved her and cared for her for many years and who are lovingly caring for her calves, Neema, born in August 2007 and Miles, born in January 2009 who remain an integral part of the Houston Zoo’s giraffe family.

Baby Elephant Baylor

After a pregnancy lasting almost 23 months, Shanti, a 19-year-old Asian elephant, delivered a healthy 348-pound male calf. The calf has been named Baylor by the Zoo’s elephant care team in recognition of the unprecedented and ongoing advances made by Baylor College of Medicine’s research team to significantly reduce the threat of elephant herpes virus.

Little Cat, Big Problem

Ocelots are critically endangered here in Texas. Once ranging through most of the state in areas heavily wooded or dense bushy areas, there are currently only about 80 to 120 individuals remaining in wild – about 35 of those remaining live in or near the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge in Cameron County.

Grand Opening of Redesigned Jaguar Exhibit

Kam Balam and Cocoy, our two jaguars, now have more space, a new waterfall, and a new pool thanks to these upgrades. Jaguars are great swimmers - so they'll enjoy the new water-play aspects of their exhibit.

Two Baby Elephants in 2010

Great things are happening at the Houston Zoo in 2010. Two new baby elephants AND the grand opening of The African Forest will be tremendous additions to the Zoo.

New African Lions

The newest arrivals at the Houston Zoo are three young female African lions. Born in July 2008 at Ft. Worth Zoo, the girls are beginning to get settled into their new home and the keepers are beginning to see signs of their individual personalities.

Houston Toads Released

On September 21, endangered Houston Toads raised at the zoo from eggs were released back into the wild. The head start program to rear juvenile toads in captivity and release them in the wild is just one component of a broader recovery effort for the species.

Shoebill Storks Make Their Debut

Only a few zoos in the world have shoebills, so the Houston Zoo's addition of this young pair of big African birds is a significant achievement for our bird department. Named after their prominent shoe-shaped bills, shoebills are a vulnerable bird species whose feathers turn completely gray as they mature.

Reinventing the Rhino

The Houston Zoo has joined with the International Rhino Foundation (IRF) to support the return of this species to Botswana. The long-term goal is to translocate animals to protected areas in the Okavango Delta and the Mashatu Game Reserve, as well as support Rhino Protection Units in Zimbabwe.

Out of Africa: the Chimpanzee

Coming in 2010 to Phase One of the African Forest, chimpanzees will thrive in the immersive environment reminiscent of the forest landscape of western equatorial Africa. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are native to central and western Africa and their population is becoming fragmented as more humans infringe upon their habitat.
